Position Overview

This position would be located in Shaw Industries Global HQ office in Dalton Georgia. Shaw is open to candidates outside of the Dalton area and is willing to relocate candidates to the area.

Reporting to the Vice President of Total Rewards, the Director of Payroll Services is a strategic HR business leader and department head with full management authority within general policy guidelines and budgetary parameters established by the company. This leader provides enterprise-wide strategic and operational oversight for more than $1 billion in annual payroll supporting approximately 18,000 U.S. and international associates, while leading a team of 20+ employees and contractors and managing a multimillion-dollar operating budget.

As a trusted partner to HR, Operations, Finance, IT, Tax, Legal, Internal Audit, vendors, and executive leadership, the role leverages relational excellence to build trust, influence decisions, and foster alignment across the organization. The position connects payroll and workforce strategies to business priorities, associate experience, risk management, and operational performance, with legal accountability for accurate, timely, and compliant end-to-end payroll operations, including payroll processing, federal, state, local, and international tax reporting, payroll accounting, time and attendance, vendor management, and regulatory compliance.

A forward-thinking leader, this role positions Payroll as a strategic, analytical, and technology-enabled enterprise function, not simply a transactional service. As owner of one of the company’s largest controllable expenses, this leader drives transformation through technology, automation, AI, analytics, process redesign, and vendor optimization to enhance scalability, compliance, operational resilience, associate experience, cost management, and measurable enterprise value.

Job Responsibilities

• Sets enterprise strategy for payroll, time and attendance, payroll tax & accounting, and related HR processes.
• Serves as a strategic HR advisor on payroll, labor costs, compliance, associate experience, and operational performance.
• Leads payroll transformation and modernization initiatives that improve accuracy, scalability, efficiency, compliance, and employee experience.
• Oversees payroll governance, policies, controls, audits, tax reporting, SOX compliance, and federal, state, local, and international requirements.
• Partners with HR and Operations to improve workforce utilization, scheduling, overtime management, productivity, and payroll accuracy.
• Leads optimization of Workday, time and attendance, payroll platforms, integrations, analytics, automation, and AI-enabled solutions.
• Develops payroll and workforce technology strategies, business cases, and roadmaps that deliver measurable financial and operational outcomes.
• Owns payroll vendor strategy, governance, performance management, contracts, and continuous improvement.
• Establishes KPIs, dashboards, service levels, and workforce analytics to drive data-informed business decisions.
• Advises senior leaders on payroll trends, workforce insights, cost opportunities, regulatory risk, and transformation priorities.
• Builds a high-performing organization through talent development, succession planning, cross-training, and continuous improvement.
• Manages the Payroll Services budget, resources, operating expenses, technology investments, and financial accountability for one of the company’s largest controllable expenses.
• Build strong partnerships across HR, Total Rewards, Operations, Finance, IT, Tax, Legal, Audit, international teams, and external partners.
• Represents Payroll Services in enterprise workforce strategy, HR technology, AI, automation, and transformation initiatives.

Knowledge

• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• 10+ years of progressive experience in payroll, HR operations, Total Rewards, or related leadership roles preferred.
• Deep expertise in payroll operations, payroll tax and accounting, wage and hour requirements, employment law, audit controls, and SOX compliance.
• Knowledge of U.S. multi-state and international payroll models, governance, vendors, and regulatory requirements.
• Knowledge of workforce management, time and attendance, HRIS/ERP platforms, Workday, automation, AI, analytics, and emerging HR technologies.
• Understanding financial management, business cases, ROI, cost optimization, and operational performance metrics.
