Job Summary/Basic Functions

The University of Mary Washington has an exciting opportunity to join our team as the Director of Accounting. The Director of Accounting provides strategic leadership and oversight for the University's accounting and cashiering functions. This position ensures the integrity, accuracy and compliance of all financial operations, including general ledger management, reconciliations, cash handling, grants accounting, system processes, and financial reporting. The role collaborates extensively with campus departments, state agencies and external stakeholders to maintain compliance with applicable regulations and support the University's financial objectives. This position assists with the implementation of GASB and GAAP standards.

Required KSAs/Competencies/Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), regulatory compliance and general financial management.
  • Ability to analyze and prepare financial transactions.
  • Advanced skill in performing complex reconciliations and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency in preparing accurate financial statements and reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to train and direct accounting support staff and fiscal technicians.
  • Advanced proficiency in electronic integrated accounting systems and enterprise applications.
  • Ability to understand and evaluate system interfaces and data flow between financial systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly.
  • Strong organization, analytical, and problem-solving skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. 

Required Experience:

  • Progressive experience in accounting, finance, or related fiscal management roles with demonstrated responsibility for increasingly complex financial operations.
  • Experience performing and overseeing complex account reconciliations, resolving discrepancies, financial analysis, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Experience managing or overseeing cash operations, including daily cash receipts, deposits, reconciliations, and internal controls.
  • Experience with financial reporting, audit support and compliance in accordance with GAAP and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Experience using enterprise financial systems for financial processing, reporting and reconciliation.
  • Experience with month-end and year-end close processes, including, preparation and review of financial reports and reconciliations.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and ability to train, guide and support accounting staff and fiscal technicians.
  • Advanced experience with excel, including pivot tables and complex data analysis.

Additional Considerations:

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or related business field; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Master's Degree in Accounting, Finance or related business field; or equivalent combination of training and experience.


Experience:

  • Experience in Higher Education.
  • Experience with BANNER, Workday and Cardinal.


LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Governmental Financial Manager (CGFM).
