The Director of Accounting provides leadership and oversight of the Accounting Department and ensures the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of the organization's financial information. The Director works closely with the VP of Finance, Executive Leadership, and department leaders to support financial planning, decision-making, regulatory compliance, internal controls, and continuous improvement of accounting processes and systems.
Essential Responsibilities
- Lead monthly and annual accounting close processes, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, General Ledger activity, Chart of Accounts, and financial statements. Prepare and analyze monthly, annual, and ad-hoc financial reports for Executive Leadership, management, and the Board as appropriate.
- Lead the development and monitoring of the annual Operating and Capital Budgets. Work with department leaders to establish budgets, monitor results, explain variances, and provide financial guidance.
- Interpret financial results, identify trends and risks, and provide recommendations to Executive Leadership. Educate management regarding financial performance, accounting treatment, policies, and the financial impact of operational decisions.
- Develop and maintain rates for organizational services, including Client Care and Supervision, Room & Board, and other applicable services. Monitor costs, funding requirements, contracts, and regulatory changes affecting rates.
- Manage and coordinate the annual financial statement audit and support other audits, compliance reviews, and regulatory reporting. Prepare required schedules and documentation and monitor resolution of audit findings and recommendations.
- Develop, maintain, and monitor effective internal controls. Identify financial risks and control weaknesses and recommend improvements to safeguard organizational assets and ensure accurate, authorized, and properly documented transactions.
- Supervise the Payroll function and ensure payroll is processed accurately and timely while maintaining appropriate controls and compliance with organizational policies.
- Provide leadership for the effective use and ongoing improvement of accounting and financial systems, including NetSuite. Identify opportunities for automation, improved reporting, data integrity, efficiency, and internal controls. Participate in system implementations, upgrades, and integrations as needed.
- Provide oversight and guidance regarding Member Funds, purchasing, expense management, credit cards, and other program-related financial activity. Ensure appropriate controls, documentation, reconciliation, reporting, and compliance with organizational and regulatory requirements.
- Direct, supervise, and evaluate select Accounting staff and volunteers. Establish expectations, provide coaching and development, promote cross-training, and ensure the department has the skills and resources necessary to meet organizational needs.
- Partner with the VP of Finance and Executive Leadership on financial planning, organizational initiatives, technology investments, service changes, capital projects, and other strategic decisions. Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support short- and long-term organizational goals.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the VP of Finance, CEO, or other appropriate leadership.
Education & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required. CPA or CMA certification preferred.
- Minimum of seven years of progressive accounting experience, including significant supervisory or management experience. Nonprofit, healthcare, human services, or similarly regulated organization experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, account reconciliations, internal controls, and financial analysis.
- Experience coordinating annual financial audits and working with external auditors.
- Demonstrated experience developing and monitoring Operating and Capital Budgets.
- Strong analytical, organizational, leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with accounting and financial management systems; NetSuite experience preferred.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications, with the ability and willingness to use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to assist with research, analysis, reporting, process improvement, and other job functions while maintaining appropriate confidentiality, accuracy, and professional judgment.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate processes, identify inefficiencies, and implement system and process improvements.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, maintain confidentiality, and work effectively in a changing environment.
- Must possess a valid Wisconsin driver's license and meet agency driving standards, when driving is required. Must provide proof of auto insurance.
- Must pass applicable Wisconsin Caregiver Background Checks, including Department of Justice Criminal Record Checks and/or equivalent checks required based on previous states of residence.
