Under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Accounting is responsible for leading key accounting functions, including financial reporting and analysis, general ledger oversight, consolidations, monthly close activities, internal and external controls, external audit coordination, and support for acquisitions, sale of companies or facilities, and related due diligence. This position serves as a key accounting leader and business partner to Operations, Accounting, Finance, Tax, Legal, Information Technology, Sales, and external partners. The Director of Accounting is expected to strengthen accounting processes, improve systems and workflows, support accurate and timely financial reporting, develop direct reports, and provide thoughtful analysis and recommendations to support business decisions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Own and continuously improve the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting and analysis
- Oversee and prepare detailed financial reporting including consolidation
- Analyze activity in the general ledger
- Make journal entries
- Support organizational financial objectives by providing financial analyses and recommendations
- Oversee and prepare quarterly financial statements for members and bank group
2. Lead, develop, and mentor direct reports
- Ensures daily/monthly tasks are performed as expected
- Guides and direct employee activities by setting goals
- Ensures resources are properly aligned and provides for development of direct reports
- Maintain and strengthen internal accounting controls and procedures over various areas of responsibility, such as monthly consolidation; foreign and domestic subsidiary reporting; fixed asset analysis; inventory costing and accruals; audit readiness, financial data integrity, and documentation standards across areas of responsibility
3. Continuous in-depth communication with operations and department personnel to interpret financial results, identify trends, explain variances, and support business decision-making, including General managers, Plant Managers, maintenance and repairs, Accounting, Finance, Tax, Legal, IT and Sales staff, finance leads with foreign and domestic subsidiaries, and external sources
4. Resolving problems/issues with a large variety of departments and individuals
- Acts as informal “Help Desk” for many, using technical accounting knowledge
- Company systems
- Processes and procedures
5. Collaborate with Business Analysts and other departments to identify and implement improvements to systems and business processes
- Support acquisitions or sales of companies, facilities, , and integration, including due diligence; initial setup and purchase accounting; and analysis, etc.
6. Handle special projects, miscellaneous reports, and various tasks based on the needs of the Vice President- Corporate Development & Treasurer, Tax Director, Executives, and Operational Personnel
- Build strategies for continuous process improvement in the monthly closing process, accounts payable, inventory costing, fixed assets, accounting systems, reporting tools, automation, ERP processes, and data analytics capabilities
7. Coordinate and oversee Accounting Department activities with Company’s outside auditors for audits of financial statements of the Company and in the presentation of financial information and disclosures
8. Other duties as needed
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Strong communication skills and leadership abilities; ability to translate financial data into practical business insights and communicate effectively with operations and executive leadership
- Strong organizational skills needed to plan and prioritize work activities
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, consolidations, general ledger accounting, and internal controls and procedures
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Expertise in financial software and systems for efficient operations
- Well versed with accounting issues involving locations in multiple countries and states
- Ability to work and interact with departments throughout the organization
- Experience improving processes, strengthening controls, and leading change within an accounting or finance function
- Ability and willingness to make timely decisions while exhibiting sound and accurate judgment
- Proficient in Microsoft office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- BA/BS Degree in Accounting
- Certified Public Accountant (preferred)
- 6+ years of Accounting/Controller experience including managerial roles
Formal education may be substituted with experience and training when competency in the position is demonstrated.
