What you will do:

Job Overview

The Director of Commodities Procurement will lead lumber and wood products sourcing strategy, manage supplier relationships, and support operating companies with market insight, purchasing guidance, and supply continuity. This role requires strong commodity market expertise, disciplined negotiation, and the ability to deliver quality products at competitive costs.

Key Responsibilities

• Marketing Analysis & Forecasting: Monitor lumber futures, cash markets, and economic trends to anticipate supply, demand, and pricing shifts.
• Strategic Procurement: Source dimension lumber, engineered wood, OSB, plywood, and specialty products to meet cost, margin, and service objectives.
• Vendor Relations & Negotiations: Negotiate pricing, delivery, payment terms, and volume programs with mills, brokers, and secondary suppliers.
• Inventory Management: Partner with operating companies to balance inventory, improve turns, reduce carrying costs, and prevent stockouts.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Advise operating company procurement teams on market changes, sourcing opportunities, availability, and anticipated price movement.
• Performance Tracking: Monitor supplier performance, order fulfillment, and product quality or warranty issues.
• Distribution Strategy: Identify reload center opportunities to support volume purchasing and efficient redistribution to local operating companies.

Qualifications & Requirements

• 8-10+ years of experience in procurement, commodity trading, or category management, with a focus on lumber and building materials.
• Strong understanding of lumber manufacturing, grades, species, and the building materials supply chain.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build vendor relationships and advise internal teams.
• Strong quantitative skills and the ability to interpret market data to support profitable purchasing decisions.
• Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration required; supply chain or forestry training preferred.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and LBM industry ERP systems.
