Hirewell is partnering with a confidential real estate development company in Houston to hire a Development Accountant. This is a newly created role due to company growth and is a strong opportunity for someone with construction, project accounting, real estate, or development accounting experience who wants broader exposure across both project-level and corporate accounting.
This person will support both the Corporate and Development teams, helping with project cost tracking, construction draw support, accounts payable, bank reconciliations, journal entries, month-end close, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, hands-on, and comfortable working in a busy environment where priorities can shift and follow-through matters.
What you’ll do
-
Support the monthly construction loan draw process, including compiling draw packages and backup documentation.
-
Review, process, and route vendor and subcontractor invoices for approval.
-
Track AP payments and help prepare check runs, ACH payments, and wire transfers for review.
-
Respond to vendor and subcontractor questions and research payment history as needed.
-
Prepare monthly bank reconciliations for multiple accounts.
-
Post, review, and maintain journal entries and general ledger activity.
-
Track and analyze job costs for construction projects and property-related transactions.
-
Maintain recurring accounting schedules, spreadsheets, and project files.
-
Assist with month-end close, audit requests, financial reporting, and ad hoc reporting.
-
Provide light property management accounting support, including rent, security deposit, prepaid item, tenant billing, and revenue entries as needed.
What we’re looking for
-
Experience in construction accounting, project accounting, real estate development accounting, or property management accounting.
-
Strong accounting foundation, including bank reconciliations, journal entries, GL activity, AP, and month-end support.
-
Ability to manage details, stay organized, and follow through under deadline pressure.
-
Comfortable working cross-functionally with accounting, development, construction, vendors, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders.
-
Proactive problem-solver who can take work forward independently and ask thoughtful questions when needed.
-
Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables and lookup functions.
-
Experience with Rent Manager and Procore is highly preferred; SharePoint experience is a plus.
-
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration preferred; an Associate’s degree with directly relevant experience may be considered.
Ideal fit
This role is a strong fit for someone who enjoys project accounting but wants to grow into a broader development accounting role. You may be coming from a general contractor, construction company, real estate developer, property management firm, or another project-heavy accounting environment.
The right person will be hands-on, flexible, and willing to jump in where needed. This is not a narrow “stay in your lane” accounting role; it requires someone who can learn project nuances, manage multiple moving parts, and support a growing team.
Why this opportunity
-
Newly created position due to growth.
-
Exposure to both development accounting and corporate accounting.
-
Opportunity to support real estate and construction-related projects.
-
Broad scope across AP, draws, job costs, GL, reconciliations, and reporting.
-
Direct visibility to accounting and development leadership.
-
Strong compensation for the right experience level.
