III. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field required (CPA or Master’s Degree preferred)
- Minimum 3 years accounting experience within a large organization and/or school district
- Strong working knowledge of UCOA and government accounting principles
- Experience with school district financial systems and software (MUNIS)
- Excellent attention to detail, organizational and communication skills
- Familiarity with Rhode Island Department of Education reporting requirements
- MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The Deputy Finance Director is to assist the Chief Financial Officer in the administration of the department’s business affairs. The major emphasis and day-to-day responsibilities are, but not limited to, performing or assisting in the performance of the following:
- Assists the Chief Financial Officer in the preparation of the annual budget and other related activities
- Assists in monitoring and revising the budget accounts on a periodic basis.
- Monitor and maintain cash control and disbursement reconciliations, student activity account reconciliations and analysis.
- Work with various staff members to review the status of budget accounts to guard against overspending.
- Control and maintain fiscal systems by preparing monthly and year end financial statements
- Assures compliance with and assists, as necessary in the preparation of all regulatory agency reports including: Federal, State, and Department of Education, Examples of reports are UCOA, GAAP, GASB, Annual Financial Statement Audit, Single Audit.
- Assists in monitoring the financial affairs of the school lunch program and the Grant Fiscal Program.
- Assists the Chief Financial Officer in all purchasing activities, including the preparation of bid specifications, correspondence with vendors relating to order and invoice problems, etc.
- Prepares and maintains financial and ordering records relating to the annual ordering system of supplies, textbooks, equipment, etc.
- Assists in overall operation of the Business Office staff including the review and documentation of the various secretarial functions.
- Assists in supervising the account receivables functions in such areas as tuition, receipts, etc.
- Attends School Committee meetings only as required and performs such other functions and duties as directed by the Chief Financial Officer of Cranston Public Schools.
- Assist in supervision and direction of employees in the Department of Business & Operations.
- Access and analyze information to assist and act in a confidential capacity to the Chief Financial Officer regarding the formulation and effectuation of management policies and personnel directives in the field of labor relations as it relates to the School Department.
- Perform such other tasks as may, from time-to-time; be assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the School Committee’s Policy on Evaluation of Administrative Personnel.
VII. WORK YEAR/SALARY
The position of Director of Business is a full-time, 260-day per calendar
year position subject to salary, holidays, and paid vacation as established
by School Committee policy.
