Position Title: Controller Location: Calgary, AB Job Type: Full Time Permanent

Position Summary: Reporting to the Director of Finance or designate, the Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial reporting, accounting operations, internal controls, and administrative functions of the organization. This role ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial data, leads the accounting team, manages month‑end and year‑end processes, and provides insights that support strategic decision‑making. The Controller also oversees budgeting and forecasting, works closely with auditors and external partners, and ensures adherence to accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and corporate policies.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Reporting & Analysis

Lead the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reporting packages for senior leadership and head office. Ensure all reporting complies with GAAP/IFRS and internal reporting standards. Analyze financial results, trends, and variances; provide recommendations to enhance performance and operational efficiency. Identify discrepancies in financial data and resolve issues promptly.

Accounting Operations

Oversee day‑to‑day accounting functions, including AP, AR, payroll accounting, general ledger, fixed assets, and inventory accounting. Maintain a robust chart of accounts and ensure company-wide adherence to accounting policies. Direct month‑end and year‑end close processes to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and completeness. Develop a working understanding of all transaction processing cycles and provide guidance and support to the team as needed.

Internal Controls & Compliance

Develop, implement, and monitor internal control frameworks to ensure accuracy and mitigate risk. Ensure company accounting practices comply with regulatory, audit, and tax requirements. Manage external financial statement audits, internal audits, and income/commodity tax filings. Maintain documentation and audit‑ready files to support compliance.

Leadership & Team Management

Lead, coach, and develop the accounting team to foster a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement. Delegate responsibilities effectively to balance workload and optimize team performance. Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders—including HR, operations, and procurement—to strengthen processes and financial alignment.

Systems, Process and Technology

Oversee accounting systems (ERP, financial tools) and recommend enhancements to improve automation and efficiency. Manage key business relationships including banking, IT/ERP providers, telecommunications, utilities, and insurance partners. Identify and lead process improvement opportunities to streamline workflows and reduce operational risk.

Strategic Support

Support executive leadership with financial modeling, scenario analysis, and risk assessments to inform business decisions. Lead annual budgeting and forecasting processes. Provide financial expertise to support operational initiatives and organizational strategy.

Qualifications and Skills: Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. CPA or equivalent designation strongly preferred. 5-7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including leadership roles. Experience in manufacturing, construction, or related industry is an asset.

Skills & Competencies

Strong knowledge of GAAP/IFRS and financial reporting standards. Proficiency with ERP/accounting systems (e.g., Sage, NetSuite, SAP, Dynamics). Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills. Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities. High degree of accuracy and attention to detail. Proven ability to lead and develop teams. Strong communication skills with the ability to convey complex information clearly.
