Controller

Big Bend Hospice is seeking a strategic and experienced Controller to provide leadership and oversight of all core accounting functions. Reporting directly to the CFO and serving as a key member of the Operational Leadership Team, this role ensures the integrity of financial operations while supporting the organization’s mission-driven work in hospice care.

The Controller will oversee all areas of accounting, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, fixed assets, cash forecasting, fund accounting, trust reconciliation, debt activity, and revenue oversight. This position plays a critical role in maintaining financial accuracy, supporting organizational decision-making, and driving process improvements across the finance function.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Oversee preparation and accuracy of financial reports, statements, and month-end close.
• Other duties as assigned
• Approve standard and non-standard journal entries, accruals, and system integrations.
• Monitor account reconciliations and ensure timely resolution of discrepancies.
• Supervise accounts payable processes, vendor payments, prepaid expenses, and asset depreciation.
• Coordinate the annual audit and Medicare Cost Report; support budget development.
• Maintain accurate fiscal records, documentation, and compliance files.
• Drive process improvements, strengthen internal controls, and support cross-training initiatives.
• Assist in gathering and entering data for the organization’s annual budget.
• Collaborate with leadership to provide guidance on budgeting and financial management.
• Partner with Human Resources on benefit analysis, HRIS customization, and related projects.
• Oversee data integrity across financial systems and reporting processes.

 Supervisory Responsibilities

• Supervise Senior Accountants, Payroll Administrator, and Accounts Payable Specialist.
• Ensure team members are properly trained and understand role expectations.
• Provide coaching, manage performance, and document accordingly.
• Support employee development to promote engagement and growth.
• Conduct regular one-on-one meetings per organizational policy.
• Monitor attendance and approve timecards and time-off requests.
• Ensure compliance with required education modules and annual competency reviews.
• Foster a positive, professional, and collaborative team environment.

Work Schedule:   

• Monday-Friday: 8:00 am- 5:00 pm.  

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant financial experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory role

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Proficiency with ERP systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and advanced spreadsheets
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills
• High level of accuracy and attention to detail
• Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage and develop a team
• Ability to adapt to changing business needs and implement process improvements
