Our client is looking for a Controller to join their start-up and oversee all GAAP & Statutory financial reporting. Experience working for an insurance company in either accounting or financial reporting is highly desired.
This opportunity is ideal for an accomplished Senior Accountant or Assistant Controller who has successfully led accounting professionals and is prepared to take the next step into a Controller role. As Controller, you will be responsible for the organization’s accounting and financial reporting functions, including both GAAP and statutory reporting, financial close processes, regulatory compliance, and NAIC filings. You will collaborate closely with the consulting actuary, investment management partners, and executive leadership while helping establish and optimize key financial systems and processes.
This role offers a unique chance to build infrastructure, develop a high-performing accounting team, and play a critical role in shaping the financial operations of a growing insurance carrier from the ground up.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the complete financial close and reporting process on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
- Prepare and manage all NAIC statutory filings, including quarterly and annual statement submissions.
- Monitor developments in Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) and ensure ongoing compliance with evolving regulatory requirements.
- Produce and analyze GAAP and statutory financial statements, providing meaningful insights and recommendations to senior leadership.
- Design, implement, and maintain a strong internal control framework along with supporting policies and procedures.
- Manage chart of accounts administration, validate Insurance Accounting Suite journal entries, and oversee investment accounting reconciliations.
- Lead the implementation, configuration, and integration of FIS accounting and reporting platforms with policy administration, investment, and reporting systems.
- Serve as the primary accounting liaison to external auditors, reinsurers, actuaries, tax advisors, and insurance regulators.
- Recruit, mentor, and develop accounting personnel, including the Senior Accountant, Junior Accountant, and Systems & Reporting Analyst.
- Deliver timely and accurate financial information directly to executive leadership and the CEO.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; an MBA is advantageous.
- Professional certifications such as CPA, CMA, or CFA are highly desirable.
- Minimum of eight years of experience within an insurance company accounting or financial reporting environment.
- At least three years of direct responsibility for, or significant involvement in, NAIC statutory reporting.
- Demonstrated progression into increasingly responsible accounting leadership roles, whether as an Assistant Controller, Senior Statutory Accountant, Controller, or similar position.
- Insurance-related education, certifications, or designations such as LOMA, AIRC, APIR, or equivalent credentials are preferred.
- Proven success building, developing, and elevating accounting teams.
- Strong understanding of regulatory and accounting requirements affecting Life, Annuity, and Accident & Health insurance businesses.
- Experience working with insurance-focused general ledger systems, including FIS Insurance Accounting Suite or comparable platforms.
- Familiarity with statutory reporting applications such as FIS Statutory Reporter, Sovos, or similar solutions.
- Knowledge of investment accounting processes and coordination with third-party providers such as Clearwater Analytics.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including complex formulas, pivot tables, lookups, and automation techniques.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to confidently engage executives, regulators, auditors, and other stakeholders.
- A proactive, hands-on leadership style characterized by accountability, initiative, and a passion for building scalable processes and teams.
