Construction Project Accountant
Location: Saint Petersburg, FL
Work Arrangement: On-site, permanent
Schedule: Full-time | Monday to Friday

Description
We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Project Accountant to oversee the financial performance of assigned construction projects. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate cost tracking, revenue recognition, forecasting, and financial reporting while partnering closely with project managers and operational teams to support profitability and strategic decision-making.
The ideal candidate brings strong experience in project-based accounting environments and thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor project costs, analyze spending trends, and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and profitability
- Support budgeting and forecasting activities, including project-level financial projections and scenario analysis
- Conduct detailed variance analysis, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and ad-hoc financial reports to support leadership decision-making
- Manage inventory-related accounting activities, including reconciliations and valuation accuracy
- Maintain and improve cost accounting systems, processes, and reporting tools
- Ensure compliance with internal financial controls, company policies, and contractual requirements
- Partner with project managers, procurement, and operations teams to maintain financial alignment and resolve discrepancies
- Assist with Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting and cost-to-complete analysis
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience within project-based environments such as construction, engineering, or related industries (experience within commercial construction, HVAC, or mechanical contracting industries is a strong plus)
- Familiarity with Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting and cost-to-complete analysis
- Strong knowledge of job cost accounting and percentage-of-completion (POC) revenue recognition
- Experience working with ERP systems such as Sage or similar platforms
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including financial modeling and data analysis
- Knowledge of AIA billing procedures and construction contract structures
- CPA certification or progress toward certification is a plus
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment
- Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
