Position Summary:
The Assistant Vice President (AVP), Accounting is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations of the Credit Union and ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of financial records and reporting. This position supports the VP, Accounting/Controller by managing accounting processes, maintaining effective internal controls, ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulatory requirements, and leading accounting staff. AVP, Accounting plays a critical role in the monthly and annual financial close processes, financial statement preparation, general ledger management, reconciliations, accounts payable, fixed assets, investments, and regulatory reporting. This position partners with departments throughout the Credit Union to support strategic initiatives, process improvements, and sound financial management practices.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
35% Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting
• Oversee daily accounting operations, including reconciliations, accounts payable, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, investments, and subsidiary ledger activities. Ensure proper maintenance of the general ledger and subsidiary accounting records. Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP. Prepare monthly financial statements, statistical reports, and variance analyses for management review. Ensure all month-end adjusting entries and account reconciliations are completed accurately and timely. Administer monthly general ledger certification processes and resolve reconciling items promptly. Communicate accounting issues, financial trends, risks, and opportunities to the VP, Accounting/Controller and recommend corrective actions where appropriate.
25% Internal Controls, GAAP & Regulatory Compliance
• Maintain an effective internal control environment to safeguard Credit Union assets from theft, fraud, embezzlement, and misappropriation.
• Ensure accounting activities comply with GAAP, internal policies, and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Review accounting transactions for proper recording and financial statement presentation.
• Monitor accounting processes to ensure accuracy and regulatory compliance.
• Recommend updates to policies and procedures designed to strengthen controls and improve efficiency.
• Assist in implementing accounting and operational policies established by the VP, Accounting/Controller.
20% Leadership & Staff Development
• Supervise and develop accounting staff through coaching, training, mentoring, and performance management.
• Participate in recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding new employees.
• Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback and development opportunities.
• Conduct regular departmental meetings and communicate organizational updates, strategic objectives, procedural changes, and departmental goals.
• Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, continuous improvement, and professional growth.
• Oversee employee scheduling, attendance management, training, and departmental productivity.
10% Audit, Examination & Regulatory Support
• Coordinate accounting-related activities for external audits, internal audits, and NCUA examinations.
• Assist with gathering and providing documentation requested by auditors and examiners.
• Participate in audit walkthroughs and respond to accounting-related inquiries.
• Monitor corrective action plans and ensure timely resolution of audit findings.
• Support regulatory reporting and ensure documentation is maintained in accordance with examination requirements.
10% Process Improvement & Special Projects
• Assist in developing accounting procedures and controls for new products, services, system implementations, and process enhancements.
• Review departmental processes for efficiency improvements and implement best practices where appropriate.
• Participate in conversion projects, system upgrades, and strategic initiatives affecting accounting operations.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Opportunities:
- Eight to ten years of similar or related experience.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred. Equivalent combination of education, certifications, and experience may be considered. CPA/CMA/CFA designation preferred but not required.
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP and financial institution accounting.
- Knowledge of NCUA regulations and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Advanced Excel and financial reporting skills.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience with accounting systems, controls, audit support, and process improvement
- Typical office environment requiring prolonged periods of computer use, sitting, phone communication, and routine office activities. Ability to perform repetitive hand and keyboard functions.
- Professional office environment requires frequent interaction with employees, management, auditors, regulators, vendors, and business partners. Occasional extended hours may be necessary to meet month-end, year-end, audit, examination, and project deadlines.
Salary:
- The minimum and maximum base salary range for this position is $108,058.12 to $175,374.04 in California.
- The target starting base hourly rate is between $108,058.12 to $124,995.09.
- This compensation and benefits information is based on Los Angeles Federal Credit Union's good faith estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future.
- The starting base salary within the range will depend on a variety of factors that may include relevant prior experience and/or education, or skills and expertise.
