We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for UK-based accounting professionals with hands-on expertise in ASC 606 revenue recognition, technical accounting, audit, accounting advisory, and complex financial reporting matters.
This role supports a research initiative focused on creating, reviewing, and evaluating advanced accounting scenarios for frontier AI systems. Selected professionals will apply technical judgment to customer contracts, performance obligations, transaction-price allocation, variable consideration, principal-versus-agent analysis, and revenue-recognition timing.
Key Responsibilities
ASC 606 Technical Accounting
- Analyse complex revenue-recognition scenarios under ASC 606
- Review customer contracts and identify distinct performance obligations
- Assess transaction prices, variable consideration, constraints, and allocation methodologies
- Determine whether revenue should be recognised at a point in time or over time
- Apply technical accounting guidance to realistic commercial arrangements
Contract & Revenue Policy Review
- Evaluate contract terms that may affect revenue recognition and financial reporting
- Review revenue policies for technical accuracy, completeness, and consistency
- Assess contract modifications, termination provisions, warranties, options, and customer incentives
- Identify potential accounting issues involving collectability, enforceable rights, and contractual obligations
Accounting Scenario Development & Evaluation
- Create realistic accounting scenarios grounded in professional audit and advisory experience
- Review proposed solutions and assess the quality of technical accounting conclusions
- Identify unsupported assumptions, missed accounting issues, and incorrect interpretations of guidance
- Explain conclusions clearly through structured technical analysis
- Help establish high-quality reference materials for advanced accounting evaluations
Financial Reporting & Documentation
- Review financial statements and disclosures relating to revenue recognition
- Prepare or evaluate technical accounting memoranda and supporting documentation
- Assess principal-versus-agent considerations and gross-versus-net presentation
- Analyse the consistency of accounting conclusions with applicable guidance and contractual facts
- Communicate complex accounting judgments clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
Ideal Profile
Strong candidates may have:
- Substantial professional experience in technical accounting, audit, accounting advisory, or financial reporting
- Direct hands-on experience applying ASC 606 to complex customer arrangements
- Experience reviewing contracts, revenue policies, financial statements, and technical accounting memoranda
- Strong understanding of performance obligations, variable consideration, transaction-price allocation, and revenue timing
- Experience within a leading accounting, audit, advisory, or professional-services organisation
- Excellent analytical judgment and attention to technical detail
- Strong written communication and the ability to explain accounting conclusions clearly
- Current residence in the United Kingdom with the right to work in the UK
- Availability to contribute up to 40 hours per week depending on project requirements
Educational Background
- A degree in accounting, finance, economics, business, or a related discipline is highly relevant
- Professional accounting qualifications such as ACA, ACCA, CA, CPA, or an equivalent credential are strongly preferred
- Advanced training in technical accounting, financial reporting, or audit may be valuable
- Equivalent senior-level experience in revenue recognition and accounting advisory may also be considered
Nice to Have
- Experience with complex or bundled customer contracts
- Background in software, SaaS, technology, telecommunications, professional services, or subscription-based revenue models
- Experience assessing contract modifications and variable consideration
- Knowledge of principal-versus-agent analysis and gross-versus-net presentation
- Familiarity with audit procedures involving complex revenue arrangements
- Experience preparing technical accounting memos and supporting external-audit reviews
- Understanding of differences between ASC 606 and IFRS 15
- Previous involvement in structured accounting evaluation, technical-content development, or AI-related research projects
