PURPOSE:
The Accounting Manager is responsible for the day-to-day accounting operations of PCC Structurals Carson City, including ownership of the general ledger, month-end close, financial reporting, account reconciliations, internal controls, inventory accounting, and standard cost activities. This position ensures the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of the plant's financial records in accordance with GAAP and PCC policies.
As a key business partner and the primary backup to the Plant Controller, the Accounting Manager works closely with operations and plant leadership to understand financial and operational performance, identify risks and opportunities, and provide meaningful financial analysis to support business decisions. This role provides leadership within the accounting function and assumes Plant Controller responsibilities as needed.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
General Ledger & Financial Close
- Own and maintain the integrity of the plant's general ledger and underlying financial records.
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close activities, ensuring accurate and timely completion of required deliverables.
- Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and other close-related transactions.
- Review balance sheet accounts and ensure reconciling items are identified, researched, and resolved timely.
- Ensure financial transactions are properly recorded, classified, supported, and maintained in accordance with GAAP and PCC accounting policies.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, schedules, and reporting packages.
- Investigate unusual transactions, account activity, and financial variances and ensure appropriate resolution.
- Maintain appropriate accounting documentation and supporting records to ensure financial information remains accurate and audit-ready.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare and analyze plant financial results, including revenue, cost of sales, gross margin, operating expenses, EBIT, and working capital.
- Analyze actual financial performance against budget, forecast, prior periods, and operational expectations.
- Identify significant financial trends, risks, opportunities, and variances and communicate findings to the Plant Controller and leadership team.
- Prepare clear and concise financial analyses supporting business decisions and operational initiatives.
- Support development of forecasts, annual operating plans, and long-range financial planning.
- Assist leadership in understanding the financial impact of operational and business decisions.
Cost Accounting, Inventory & Manufacturing Finance
- Maintain the integrity of the plant's standard cost system and support annual standard cost development and updates.
- Analyze manufacturing variances, including labor, overhead absorption, material usage, scrap, rework, and production efficiency.
- Partner with Operations, Production, Supply Chain, Engineering, and Quality to understand manufacturing performance and financial impacts.
- Oversee accounting activities related to inventory, including reconciliations, reserves, cycle counts, and physical inventories.
- Analyze inventory trends, excess and obsolete inventory, and working capital opportunities.
- Support evaluation of cost reduction, productivity, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ensure manufacturing transactions and inventory movements are accurately reflected in financial records.
Internal Controls, SOX & Compliance
- Maintain a strong internal control environment and ensure compliance with PCC policies and SOX requirements.
- Perform and review assigned internal controls and ensure required documentation is complete and maintained.
- Identify control deficiencies, financial risks, and process weaknesses and drive timely corrective actions.
- Support internal and external audits and coordinate preparation of requested financial records and supporting documentation.
- Ensure accounting processes and financial records remain organized and audit-ready.
- Support continuous improvement of accounting procedures, controls, and financial processes.
Business & Operational Partnership
- Partner with the Plant Controller, General Manager, and leadership team to provide financial analysis and operational insight across the business.
- Develop and maintain financial and operational KPIs used to evaluate plant performance.
- Translate financial results into meaningful information that supports operational decision-making.
- Identify opportunities to improve profitability, productivity, cost performance, and operating working capital.
- Provide financial support for capital expenditure proposals, including financial analysis, justification, and post-investment evaluation.
- Develop strong working relationships throughout the plant and maintain an active understanding of manufacturing operations.
Accounting Leadership & Plant Controller Support
- Serve as the primary backup to the Plant Controller and assume day-to-day financial leadership responsibilities when needed.
- Support the Plant Controller in maintaining the overall financial integrity of the business and safeguarding plant assets.
- Provide guidance, review, and support to accounting team members to ensure accuracy and timely completion of financial activities.
- Establish priorities and ensure accounting deadlines and reporting requirements are consistently achieved.
- Develop accounting processes, documentation, and cross-training to ensure appropriate coverage and continuity within the department.
- Proactively identify and communicate financial, operational, or control concerns to the Plant Controller.
- Demonstrate a high level of ownership and accountability for plant financial results and accounting deliverables.
General
- Maintain confidentiality of company, employee, customer, and financial information.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives within accounting and across the business.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support department and business objectives.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- CPA, CMA, MBA, or other advanced accounting or finance credential preferred.
- Minimum five years of progressive accounting or financial management experience, preferably within a manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, general ledger accounting, financial reporting, account reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
- Experience with manufacturing accounting, standard costing, inventory accounting, and manufacturing variance analysis strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of SOX compliance requirements and internal control environments.
- Experience with ERP/MRP systems and financial reporting tools.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and ability to analyze large or complex financial data sets.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues, determine root causes, and drive resolution.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate financial information effectively to non-financial leaders.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and consistently meet financial reporting deadlines.
- Demonstrates a high level of ownership, follow-through, and accountability for financial results and deliverables.
- Ability to identify issues proactively and communicate financial, operational, or compliance risks in a timely manner.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and develop strong partnerships across functional areas.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to work primarily in an office environment with regular interaction throughout manufacturing operations.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout office and manufacturing areas.
- Frequent computer use and extended periods of data analysis and document review.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to safely enter manufacturing areas and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
