POSITION PURPOSE:
Manages the daily activity of the accounting department tasks. Effectively supervises team members to accurately perform accounting functions for the credit union. In addition, provides support to the Chief Financial Officer / Controller in the areas of financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting and process improvements.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure that staff performs duties in compliance with applicable federal & state laws and in conformance with GAAP. To include financial transactions, wires, and share draft processing, fixed assets, prepaid/accruals, and general ledger reconciliations.
- Provides direct supervision and management of key employees within the department.
- Ensures accurate and efficient completion of accounting department functions; performs back up functions, as necessary.
- Establishes, implements, and updates Credit Union’s policies and procedures within area of responsibility.
- Guides other departments by researching and interpreting accounting policy, applying observations and recommendations to operational issues.
- Ensures accounting records are maintained in accordance with GAAP and in compliance with other laws and regulations, recommending and implementing changes when necessary.
- Assists Chief Financial Officer/Controller in developing short- and long-term goals and objectives for the accounting department.
- Conducts special studies, analyses, and projects as requested.
- Ensures effective management and training to department staff members with a conscientious effort to meet departmental targets and credit union goals.
- Prepares reconciliation and annual financial reports daily and monthly.
- Assist other departments by researching financial and operational issues as related to and financial reporting.
- Attends and at times conduct effective, reoccurring team and/or management meetings.
- Knowledgeable of Bank Secrecy Act and OFAC compliance regulations.
- Assist Chief Financial Officer with developing and monitoring the operating budget of the organization.
Responsible for staff meeting service level standards (member service; turn-around time; risk management and regulatory compliance; day to day processing and balancing activities, audit soundness; and productivity and efficiency). - Assist the Chief Financial Officer with Asset Liability Management (ALM).
- Prepare all required and scheduled reports that adequately assess and summarize the financial condition of the credit union.
Financial Reporting and Data Analysis:
- Assists the department with data analyses projects and software administration.
- Ensures the validity and accuracy of information provided.
- Ensures accounting processes are maintained to conform to the requirements of the Federal Credit Union Act, State legislation as applicable, other Rules, Regulations and Financial Management Standards prescribed and/or recommended for the prudent financial management of the credit union.
- Ensures all financial transactions are processed within federal and state regulation which includes incoming and outgoing wires and loan participations.
- Maintains a positive, professional attitude with employees and members, and remains flexible while focusing on accepted practices, policies, productivity, and effectiveness.
- Satisfactorily manage accounting staff for optimal results.
Job Specification:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business, or related field.
- 5-10 years of credit union or banking accounting experience.
- Professional Certification in Accounting preferred.
Training Requirements:
- Maintain knowledge and is highly proficient of Microsoft Office Products (word, excel, and office).
- Use of desktop and laptop computers.
- Working knowledge of other accounting systems to support the department and improve processes.
Work Experience:
- Working in a financial institution for a minimum of 5-10 years.
- Financial accounting concepts, practices, procedures, and financial reports.
- Credit Union or banking experience desired.
- Certified Accounting Professional preferred.
- Payment processing, risk management, and regulatory compliance.

Physical Requirements
Perform primarily sedentary work on computer or laptop for an average of eight (8) hours per day. Must be capable of climbing/descending stairs in emergency situations. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile and calculator. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must by capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance.
