Midwest Food Bank is seeking an Accounting Director – Audit & Governance to provide leadership in audit, compliance, financial controls, and governance. We’re looking for a collaborative, detail-driven professional who values integrity, teamwork, and excellent stewardship and wants to use their expertise to support a mission that serves those in need.

SUMMARY & MISSION STATEMENT:
Midwest Food Bank (MFB) is a $570M non-profit organization with ten divisions in the U.S. and two operations internationally. MFB operates with $96M in assets and an annual organizational operating budget of $21M to distribute over $548M in food and disaster relief boxes to 2,400 agencies.

JOB ROLE PURPOSE & SUMMARY:
The Accounting Director – Audit & Governance is responsible for overseeing all audit and governance functions of the organization, ensuring compliance with all applicable tax and accounting regulations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Manage and oversee external financial audits and financial reporting, including annual 990 tax return.
- Administer and perform routine internal audits on financial accounts and controls such as grants, inventory, contributions, restricted funds, etc.
- Oversee grant recordkeeping and governance, ensuring accuracy, training, and compliance at the operational level.
- Administer annual workman’s compensation audit.
- Manage and oversee the processes that support the inventory system including receiving, storing and distributing inventory. Lead and conduct inventory pricing and monitoring.
- Manage banking relationships and accounts, insurance coverage and annual renewals, state registration and compliance, and financial accreditations.
- Conduct annual investment and 401(k) reviews.
- Analyze, create, and review policies and procedures; manage the corporate file center.
- Prepare quarterly dashboard and reports, as requested.
- Responsible for accounting for building/capital projects.
- Prepare, review, and process 1099s.
- Serve as back-up for Payroll.
- Work with Accounting Director – Accounting & Budgeting, record journal entries, collaborate on projects, etc.
- Additional responsibilities may include assistance with accounting and budgeting such as accounting processes, reporting, preparing dashboards and budget documents, fixed assets, invoicing, etc.

- Foster a Christ-centered culture; develop positive relationships and appreciation for volunteers, employees, partner agencies, and community and business contacts.
- Ensure compliance with all MFB policies, procedures, and rules and with all contractual obligations, regulatory standards, and relevant laws.
- Recruit, identify, train, and continue to nurture volunteers in support of job role.
- Network with peers locally and nationally and across the MFB organization.
- Execute other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 3-years relevant work experience, 5-years desired.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field desired. Certified Public Accountant preferred.
- Thorough understanding of accounting and GAAP principles and procedures.
- Experience in a broad range of accounting functions for a mid-size business.
- Performs tasks with integrity and confidentiality.
- Demonstrated ability to create a team-oriented environment and achieving results through others.
- Proven initiative, problem-solving, organization, and time management skills.
- Excellent professional communications, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
- Ability to use technology or learn computer skills, such as Office 365, Salesforce, Sage Intacct, Egnyte.
- Willingness to participate in training that may include development of professional skills, education on MFB’s policies and procedures, and additional training as it relates to the requirements of the position.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer in an office setting; periods of movement in a warehouse setting.
- Minimal in-state and out-of-state travel as needed; infrequent evening and weekend obligations.
