Position Summary

Responsible for performing professional accounting functions that support the financial integrity, reporting accuracy, regulatory compliance, and operational effectiveness of South Central Regional Medical Center and affiliated entities. Exercises independent judgment in financial analysis, reconciliation, reporting, and accounting activities in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), FASB, GASB, healthcare accounting standards, and SCRMC policies. The Accountant is responsible for providing professional accounting services for a large integrated healthcare system. This position assists with general ledger maintenance, account reconciliations, financial reporting, budgeting support, internal controls, fixed asset accounting, audit preparation, and regulatory reporting. The Accountant works collaboratively with the Controller, finance staff, and operational leaders to ensure accurate financial information is available to support operational and strategic decision-making.

Essential Functions (Core Job Duties)

• Prepare and maintain general ledger accounts and supporting schedules.

• Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual account reconciliations.

• Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities.

• Prepare journal entries and supporting documentation.

• Analyze financial data and identify variances requiring investigation, explanation, or correction.

• Assist in preparing financial statements, management reports, and other financial summaries for leadership review.

• Support annual operating and capital budget processes as assigned.

• Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.

• Assist with preparation of information requested during internal audits, external audits, cost report preparation, and regulatory reviews.

• Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, healthcare regulations, grant guidelines, internal controls, and organizational policies.

• Prepare assigned regulatory, tax, and financial reporting documents.

• Research accounting issues and provide recommendations to the Controller and finance leadership.

• Monitor financial transactions for accuracy, completeness, proper account classification, and timely correction.

• Collaborate with department leaders regarding financial reporting, budget management, variance review, and expense monitoring.

• Utilize financial systems, spreadsheet tools, and reporting applications to analyze and communicate financial information.

• Support organizational initiatives focused on quality improvement, operational efficiency, fiscal stewardship, and cost management.

• Maintain accurate documentation and records that support financial integrity, compliance, audit readiness, and reliable decision-making.

• Conduct purposeful rounding with assigned leaders, internal customers, and operational stakeholders to promote communication, service excellence, issue resolution, accountability, financial stewardship, and operational effectiveness.

• Use rounding findings and stakeholder feedback to identify barriers, escalate financial or operational concerns, follow up on commitments, and support continuous improvement.

• Support SCRMC Culture of Safety and quality initiatives through reliable financial processes, timely communication, standardized documentation, and continuous improvement activities.

• Participates in training, competency validation, safety drills, survey readiness activities, performance improvement initiatives, and corrective action processes as assigned.

• Uses appropriate communication tools and escalation pathways to protect patients, visitors, staff, and organizational operations.

• Maintains compliance with SCRMC policies, regulatory requirements, privacy standards, financial control requirements, and applicable quality management processes.

• Demonstrates accountability for supporting organizational goals related to safety, compliance, service excellence, stewardship, and operational performance.

Leadership Expectations and Rounding

• Conducts purposeful rounding with assigned leaders, internal customers, finance team members, and operational stakeholders to promote communication, engagement, service excellence, accountability, issue resolution, and operational effectiveness.

• Uses rounding findings to identify barriers, escalate safety, compliance, financial, or operational concerns, recognize positive performance, follow up on commitments, and support continuous improvement.

• Documents and follows up on rounding themes, trends, barriers, and action items as required by department or organizational process.

• Models SCRMC Culture of Safety Leadership by demonstrating reliability, transparency, timely communication, respect, accountability, and support for standardized processes.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or closely related field.

• Minimum of two to three (2 to 3) years of progressively responsible accounting experience.

• Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), FASB and GASB.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, financial reporting applications and emerging AI technology.

• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive financial, employee, patient, and organizational information.

• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation preferred.

Preferred Skills and Competencies

• Healthcare accounting experience with hospital financial systems, ERP platforms, and budgeting software preferred.

• Knowledge of healthcare reimbursement methodologies, cost reporting, and regulatory reporting preferred.

• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, complex formulas, financial modeling, data analysis preferred and emerging AI tools.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, timeliness, and fiscal integrity.

• Ability to manage multiple priorities, respond to deadlines, and work collaboratively with finance and operational leaders.

Physical Demands & Work Environment Characteristics

• Work is primarily performed in a professional office environment.

• Requires prolonged periods of sitting, computer use, keyboarding, and viewing electronic screens.

• Frequent use of hands and fingers for keyboarding and operation of office equipment.

• Occasional standing, walking, reaching, bending, and lifting or carrying materials generally up to 15 pounds.

• Work may require extended hours during month-end close, year-end close, audit periods, budget preparation, regulatory reporting, and special projects.

• Exposure is generally limited to normal office environmental conditions.
