Position duties and responsibilities:

The Accountant – Intern is a motivated individual with a good work ethic and a positive attitude. They are also punctual, organised with high attention to detail. The right candidate is professional and is willing to represent our business with respect for clients, co-workers and the wider community.
The Accountant - Intern must have absolute discretion and maintain confidentiality at all times when handling client information. They will embrace a quality and ethical approach in all aspects of their role. This person should be a team player who isn’t afraid to learn and ask questions. They are able to effectively communicate with team members.
The incumbent will have a basic understanding of accounting and tax principles, particularly as applies to small business entities. This role requires active listening skills and good communication skills.
The responsibilities of the Accountant – Intern are to provide administration and client support to the Accounting Services Team. This is under guidance, mentoring, coaching and support of the Accountant. It includes, but is not limited to:
• all functions of accounts preparation up to preparing annual financials and income tax return.
• work with bookkeeping functions (inhouse and external) to ensure accuracy of client business financial reporting and reliably integrate these systems with other business systems to fulfil compliance and management reporting needs.
• contact clients as needed.
• maintenance of client business records.
• reconciliation and validation of bank accounts.
• processing accruals and associated requirements.
• preparation of activity statements, and related ATO compliance forms and requirements.
• processing of financial data for the purposes of providing management accounts and annual financial statements.
• assistance with the production of annual income tax requirements and all other manner of tasks associated with financial record keeping.
• efficiently carry out core tasks to enable accurate and timely reporting.
• support the client’s compliance and business administration functions
• provide the accounting team with quality information to fulfil client advice engagements.
• generally contribute to team effort by accomplishing tasks in a timely manner.
• undertake research and investigation on technical matters where required, appropriate to level.
• use initiative to contribute to ongoing continuous improvement.
• support and encourage high ethical standards.
• remain familiar with and adhere to compliance standards.
• maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
• maintain a clean and safe workspace at all times and abide by workplace health and safety policies and procedures.
• maintain strict confidentiality at all times.
• undertake any other lawful task as directed by the Manager.
Note: Some of the above duties are shared tasks with the Bookkeeper Team. The intention is for knowledge and skills to be shared across the organisation.

Knowledge and skills:

Qualifications: In third year of Bachelor Degree in Commerce / Accounting or equivalent

Experience:
• Experience in the preparation of business accounts is preferred, including but not limited to:
     o reconciliation of cashbooks
     o GST
     o preparation of activity statements
     o payroll administration
     o any related financial record keeping activities.
• Good working knowledge of PC based applications including the Microsoft Office suite and business related applications.
• Experience with computerised accounting software.
• Knowledge and experience in agricultural / regional based business, preferably in the finance area, giving rise to knowledge that will assist in the classification of transactions in a set of accounts and enable effective communication to clients in rural enterprises.
• Experience and/or interest in a similar role/industry preferred.
• Client / customer service experience.

• Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
• Excellent verbal and written communication

• Able to prioritise workload and meet deadlines

Additional requirements:

This position is predominantly located in the Sale/Traralgon/Foster office. There may be requirement for the incumbent to work from other locations from time to time. This includes attending the client’s premises on some occasions.

The start date is negotiable.
