Position Summary:
The primary functions of the Accountant I position is to ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll and money reviews.
MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
- Prepare and complete payroll for a multi-program and multi-cost center agency for approximately 200 employees.
- Review Personnel Action Forms, employee deductions and mileage expenses to ensure accurate payroll processing.
- Process funding of retirement plan contributions.
- Process and ensure accurate wage garnishments.
- Export payroll data from payroll system and upload into accounting system.
- Review quarterly and year-end payroll tax reports and W-2 forms for year-end distribution.
- Preform monthly petty cash reviews and review participant transactions.
- Record Consumer Social Security Benefits direct deposits in accounting software.
- Transfer and record consumer funds to and from bank accounts and pre-paid cards.
- Transfer and record HRA transactions from the bank.
- Assists Finance Director with record retrieval during audits and reviews.
- Attends all agency required trainings.
- Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Relief Responsibilities:
- Assist the Accounting Assistant with Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable.
- Assist with month-end reconciliations as needed.

Qualifications
Qualifications:
- A working knowledge of payroll regulations and changes set forth by the IRS, Comptroller of Maryland, Friends Aware Employee Handbook, including knowledge of compensation rates and related rules.
- A thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) including general ledger accounting and account reconciliations.
- A proficient knowledge of Microsoft Windows, including Word/Excel/Outlook.
- Possess a working knowledge of computerized payroll and general ledger functions.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work rapidly with a high degree of accuracy to meet weekly deadlines.
- Ability to adapt to a changing work environment.
Education and Preferred Work Experience:
BS degree in accounting or a related field preferred; however, an Associate degree and experience will be considered. Must possess a valid driver’s license with an agency approved driving record.
