Overview of the role: WestJet is seeking an Accountant - Commercial. Reporting to the Commercial Accounting Manager and working closely with fellow Finance team members and departmental stakeholders, the successful candidate will be responsible for various aspects of the accounting cycle and process improvement. The successful candidate must exhibit a high standard of excellence, enjoy problem solving, take personal initiative and possess advanced excel skills.
Key deliverables include:
Perform detailed accounting and reporting activities monthly to support an accurate and timely period-end close, including:
Posting monthly accruals, reclasses and other journal entries, Developing, completing, and refining balance sheet reconciliations and investigating any anomalies to expectation, Preparing variance analysis on monthly and quarterly data.
Continuously improve processes and procedures to evolve month-end deliverables alongside technology and operational changes. Actively partner with various teams across the organization to assist with ad-hoc reporting, analysis, projects, and decision support as required. Be an active member of the Finance team; willing to mentor and coach peers, brainstorm issues, complete ad-hoc requests, and be flexible in completing any task.
Experience and qualifications:
Completion of a professional accounting designation (CGA, CMA, CA, CPA)
Minimum 3 years’ experience in an accounting role, with progressive levels of responsibility Strong analytical and critical thinking skills Advanced excel proficiency is required An interest in learning new technology would be an asset Attention to detail, organized and thorough, with a desire for continuous improvement Effective communication skills to build collaborative relationships with business partners and to provide guidance &/or instruction to peers in the organization
Previous experience with JD Edwards or other ERP software and reporting systems (i.e., Hyperion) would be considered an asset
