2027 Summer Intern - Load and Weather Risk Analyst
MISO • Carmel, IN • Intern
Posted on Wed, Sep 9, 2026
What You’ll Do:
As our Load and Weather Risk Analyst Intern, you’ll contribute to Operations Risk Management’s mission of accurately forecasting load and quantifying risk that drives decisions in managing energy across the transmission grid — helping ensure efficient generation dispatch, adequate energy supply, and stable prices for millions of people across the region.
You’ll gain hands-on experience with:
- Developing or enhancing load probability forecasting models
- Identifying and building models that assess renewable generation risk, including ramp periods, using historical and real-time weather and load data
- Automating and modernizing legacy forecasting tools and scripts using Python and SQL
A Great Day in This Role Means:
A good day in this role means accurately forecasting load and quantifying and communicating the risk that drives decisions in managing energy across the transmission grid. Accurate weather forecasting reduces uncertainty and lowers the risk associated with renewable generation and load forecasting.
You’ll know you’re making an impact when your forecasts and risk analysis help drive efficient generation dispatch, an adequate energy supply, and stable prices.
This is a Unique Opportunity Because:
This role sits at the intersection of weather science, power systems, and financial risk — few teams in the energy industry blend meteorology with grid operations and market risk management the way this one does. You’ll gain exposure to how forecasting accuracy directly shapes operational decisions and market outcomes across MISO’s footprint.
What You’ll Be Proud to Share:
- Built or enhanced a load or renewable-generation forecasting model used to manage operational risk across the transmission grid.
- Modernized a legacy forecasting tool or script using Python and SQL.
- Gained hands-on experience interpreting weather models and their impact on renewable generation and load forecasting.
Qualifications at a Glance:
Term: June 2 – August 13, 2027 | Full-time | Paid
Location: Carmel, IN | Housing available for qualified students
Academic Level: Undergraduate and Graduate
Degree: Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or Computer Engineering
Required Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Python and SQL for data analysis
Preferred Skills:
- Coursework or experience in atmospheric science, physics, economics, or business
- Prior meteorological internship experience
- Familiarity with interpreting weather models and knowledge of renewable and thermal generation, transmission grids, and energy distribution
By the End of Your Internship, You’ll Walk Away With:
- A tangible impact story (e.g., “I built a model that improved load forecast accuracy and reduced operational risk”)
- Stronger technical skills (forecasting, data analysis, automation) and soft skills (communicating risk to decision-makers)
- A deep understanding of how weather, load, and generation risk connect to grid reliability and market outcomes
- Expanded professional network across MISO and the energy industry
- A strong résumé bullet such as: “Developed load and renewable-generation risk forecasting models at MISO, supporting efficient dispatch and reliable energy supply across the Midwest.”
