Position Summary
We are seeking a VP of Accounting to lead the accounting function for Gifthealth, a privately held digital pharmacy serving patients nationwide. This role owns accounting policy, technical accounting judgment, financial reporting integrity, and the relationship with external auditors, while overseeing the Controller, the Revenue Accountant, and the broader accounting organization.
This position plays a key role in supporting the Finance & Accounting department, partnering closely with the CFO, FP&A, Legal, Compliance, and Pharmacy Operations to ensure Gifthealth's financials accurately reflect a fast-growing, highly regulated healthcare business, including prescription revenue, third-party payer reimbursement, and inventory. The VP of Accounting will report to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), ensuring alignment with organizational goals, operational excellence, and compliance standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Own Gifthealth's accounting policies and procedures, ensuring consistent application of US GAAP across all areas of the business, including revenue recognition for prescription and subscription-based digital health revenue (ASC 606), inventory costing and obsolescence reserves, and lease accounting (ASC 842).
- Serve as the primary management point of contact for external auditors; lead annual audited financial statement preparation and manage compliance with debt covenants.
- Provide technical accounting guidance on complex or judgment-heavy transactions, including acquisitions or partnership arrangements, stock-based or equity compensation, and new product or service launches.
- Design, maintain, and continuously improve the internal controls environment across the accounting function, including controls specific to drug purchasing, inventory, and third-party payer billing and collections.
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close calendar at a strategic level, holding the Controller accountable for accuracy, timeliness, and completeness of financial statements.
- Lead, develop, and scale the accounting organization, including hiring, performance management, and succession planning for the Controller and accounting leadership team.
- Partner with FP&A on the integration of actual results into forecasting, budgeting, and board/investor reporting.
- Oversee tax strategy coordination with external tax advisors, including state pharmacy licensing fees, multi-state sales and use tax exposure, and income tax provision matters.
- Evaluate and implement accounting system and process improvements, including ERP enhancements, as the business scales.
- Present financial results, risks, and technical accounting matters to the CFO, executive leadership, and ownership/board as needed.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
Licensure/Certification: CPA strongly preferred.
Experience: 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including prior experience in a controllership or assistant controller role.
Skills:
- Strong working knowledge of US GAAP, including revenue recognition, inventory, and lease accounting standards.
- Demonstrated experience managing external auditor and lender relationships, including audited financial statement delivery.
- Experience building and scaling accounting teams and processes in a high-growth, privately held company.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate technical accounting concepts for non-accounting executives and ownership.
Desired Attributes
- Healthcare, pharmacy, PBM, insurance, or other regulated industry experience (strongly preferred).
- Public accounting background (Big 4 or national firm), particularly for audit and technical accounting depth (a plus).
Work Environment
Location: Hybrid (Corporate HQ; hybrid eligible)
Schedule: Full-time; occasional extended hours during close, audit, and reporting deadlines.
- Standard office environment.
- Some travel may be required for audit, lender, or leadership meetings.
- Regular meetings with the CFO, FP&A, Legal, Compliance, Pharmacy Operations, and executive leadership to ensure alignment.
Key Essential Functions
- Must be able to sit or work at a computer for extended periods.
- Must be able to travel as needed for audit, lender, or leadership meetings.
