Work Arrangement

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Detroit Renaissance Center, Detroit MI, three times per week, at minimum.

The Role

The General Motors Global Tax and Customs department is a team of approximately 200 people focused primarily on GM’s strategic and most complex tax and trade matters. We manage relationships with numerous external partners who perform many of our routine tax functions. We aspire to be a trusted advisor to both internal partners and external stakeholders to whom we provide actionable, innovative advice in a straightforward manner. To achieve these goals, we strive to empower team members through trust, flexibility, feedback, and career development.

The International Tax Analysis Group (“ITAG”) staff are responsible for processes, including system administration, necessary to ensure GM’s conformity with international aspects of the U.S. income tax system. This person will have responsibility for administering SOX compliance with respect to key financial accounting processes and the financial reporting of taxes, as well as the preparation of US income tax filings. In addition, this person will also be involved in monitoring, analyzing, and effectively communicating the technical aspects of ongoing global tax reform. This role will provide an opportunity for tax team members to expand on their tax provision and compliance knowledge, while also gaining experience with the large drivers of some of our most important US international inclusions.

What You'll Do

  • Prepare U.S. foreign informational income tax¬†filings (including but not limited to 5471, 8858, 8865 and 1118). ¬†

  • Analyze and prepare financial statement tax reporting data including estimated income tax provision and provision to return analyses (ASC 740-270), and outside basis differences of foreign subsidiaries (ASC 740-30-25).

  • Analyze existing and proposed statutory and regulatory tax requirements to determine their effect on tax reporting and planning.

  • Maintain global legal entity data for internal tax use.

  • Coordinate regularly with the tax return preparation, global tax accounting, legal, and tax counsel teams.

  • Operate Sarbanes Oxley 404 tax controls and support related testing.

  • Assist with ad hoc projects requiring the writing of reports and presentation of findings/data to other members of the organization.

  • Actively identify areas for process improvement, simplification, reduction of risk and increase in accuracy.

  • Assist in tax planning initiatives identifying cost saving opportunities.

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related field

  • 4-6 years of experience in public accounting, industry, tax consulting, or directly related government experience (i.e., IRS or State or Local department of taxation).

  • Demonstrates strong problem solving, analytical, and tax technical skills.

  • Ability to prioritize assignments and manage work load within statutory and internal deadlines.

  • Well-developed personal computer skills (including Microsoft-based products), and the ability to develop a strong command of relevant finance and tax compliance systems (e.g., SAP, OneSource).

  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbally and in writing) information globally, with limited review, to all levels of the organization

  • Education: Master‚Äôs degree in Taxation or Accounting.

  • OneSource Income Tax Software experience.

  • Self-motivated, strong level of interpersonal, team and partnering skills.
